The top face is known as Ishana or Sadashiva, who is rarely depicted and governs zenith and the sky (Akasha). The east face is Sadyojata or Mahadeva, the regent of the earth (Prithvi). The west face is Tatpurusha or Nandi (Shiva's bull mount) or Nandivaktra (the face of Nandi), denoting the wind, Vayu. While Vamadeva or Uma (Parvati, Shiva's consort) or Umavaktra (the face of Parvati) or Tamreshvara (water, Ap) faces north, Aghora or Bhairava looks south (fire, Agni). In some texts, the east face is called Sadyojata and the western one Tatpurusha .The icon of the five aspects represents the entire universe

Five Snake Daughters

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were seated in deep meditation on the bank of a sacred lake. At that moment, a gentle smile appeared on Lord Shiva’s face. From that divine smile, five pearls emerged and fell into the lake via Parvati . From these five pearls, five maidens were born—but not in human form; they were born in the form of serpent maidens (Nāga Kanyās).

According to the Shiva Purana, the names of Lord Shiva Parvati’s five Nāga daughters are:
  1. Jaya,
  2. Vishahar,
  3. Shamilbari,
  4. Deva, and
  5. Dotali.
Lord Shiva also granted a special boon to these daughters. According to this blessing, any devotee who worships Lord Shiva along with these five Nāga maidens with faith and devotion:
will be
  1. fearless
  2. wealth,
  3. food,
  4. knowledge
  5. prosperity

Vashista Vishvamitra

Vashista destroys Vishvamitra's entire army by the simple use of his great mystic and spiritual powers, breathing the Om syllable. Vishvamitra then undertakes a tapasya for several years to please Shiva, who bestows upon him the knowledge of celestial weaponry. He proudly goes to Vaśiștha's ashram again and uses all kinds of powerful weapons to destroy Vashista and his hermitage. He succeeded in the killings of Vashista's thousand sons but not Vashista himself.

An enraged Vashista brings out his brahmadanda, a wooden stick imbued with the power of Brahma. It consumes Vishvamitra's most powerful weapon, the brahmastra. Vashista then attempts to attack Vishvamitra, but his anger is allayed by Devas
